Sutton-in-Ashfield U3A

About S-i-A U3A

Sutton-in-Ashfield U3A has come about because other local existing groups are full to capacity so Ashfield U3A decided to sponsor a group in Sutton-in-Ashfield to enable any one with an interest that lives within that catchment area to be able to join. The first well attended inaugural meeting was on the 6th April when a small skeleton committee was formed and it was decided that The Hosiery Mills was to be the venue and meetings would be held on the second Thursday of each month. Since then there has been a steady growth in membership and volunteers for the committee who are all working hard to make Sutton-in-Ashfield U3A a friendly group that will fulfil the needs of its members. The Committee would like as much participation, ideas and help that anyone feels able to offer and are willing to listen and take forward any suggestion that other members would like us to. Our aim is to remain a group that enthuses members, promotes friendship, encourages others to join and enables them to feel that they are part of a club to be proud of.

U3A- ‘WHAT IS IT?
The third age - refers to a period of time after the First Age of childhood dependence and the Second Age of full time employment and parental responsibility.
University - refers to an opportunity to participate in educational and social activities thus encouraging members to remain mentally alert and physically active. The U3A is a self-help organization and we look to members to share their knowledge. Members meet in groups to develop their particular interests. We do not have any paid tutors; group leaders are members who volunteer to co-ordinate groups in subjects of their choice. Members are not students and qualifications are neither required nor given. Members who are fit are expected to offer to help in any way they can in the running of the U3A.

HOW ARE U3As ORGANISED?
Nationwide there are more than 400,000 members across over 1000 U3As, with thousands of interest groups. A central Trust (should this be National Office) acts as an advice centre for groups and provides educational back-up. Each group is autonomous and elects, democratically, its own executive.

WHAT DOES IT COST?
The current annual subscription is £18 per member. Members can join as many groups as they can manage. A small charge is sometimes made to cover hall hire and refreshments for the interest groups.

WHAT DO WE OFFER?
We offer an environment and a framework in which 3rd Agers can expand their horizons by joining in activities of their choice. These range widely and embrace creative, craft, social, fitness and educational. The list is theoretically without limit because any member is entitled to set up a new interest group where one does not exist. A monthly news letter is produced which includes reports of group activities and general information about Sutton-in-Ashfield U3A. Educational and Social groups: Presently we offer different interest group activities and members are free to join as many as they wish. They extend from Art to Walking and each is organised by a Group Leader. Members are encouraged to propose and set up new groups if they are so inclined and a demand is proved. We have two principles to guide us here:
"Each member is both learner and teacher"

and
"We expect members to take what they need and give what they are able"
In practical terms this operates as follows. Although many of our groups are led by one person or have one tutor, it is quite normal to find leader and tutor roles shared amongst members. This both spreads the load and makes a richer experience for both tutors and learners.
